Herbert Smith Freehills (HSF) has named Brisbane office managing partner Matt FitzGerald as the new joint managing partner for its global corporate practice and its Australia regional head of practice.

FitzGerald steps into the new roles on 1 May, succeeding Carolyn Pugsley. He will collaborate with London’s Mike Flockhart in heading up the strategic direction of HSF’s corporate practice across its offices.

“With his specific focus on Australia, Matt will lead our corporate team to help continue to grow our reputation as the go-to law firm for the biggest M&A deals, while supporting the growing demand in mid-market M&A deals across the Asia-Pacific”, executive partner – practices Ian Cox said.

FitzGerald made partner at the firm in 2009. In addition to serving as Brisbane office managing partner, he acted as deputy to Pugsley in the role of regional head of practice when Pugsley was on parental leave.

He is an M&A specialist, focusing on financial services and private equity. He has guided both listed and private companies, as well as financial sponsors, on M&A transactions, strategic alliances, and joint ventures.

HSF confirmed that Pugsley will resume her full-time legal practice. She was managing partner of the global corporate practice and Australia regional head of practice for four years.
