HSF launches free digital law course for APAC university students

Herbert Smith Freehills (HSF) has opened a free online course for university students in Asia and Australia to explore how emerging technologies impact business and law practice.

The firm is running the course for the third consecutive year, and is intended for university students of all levels and backgrounds who are interested in a law career. Attendees are not required to have prior knowledge of either technology or law. The course is open to students in Australia, Hong Kong, India, Indonesia, Japan, Mainland China, Malaysia, Singapore, South Korea, and Thailand.

"Emerging technologies such as AI and blockchain are transforming the role of lawyers – from the advice we give to the way we work – and the pace of that change is only accelerating”, said Susannah Wilkinson, regional head of emerging technology. “To be successful in the digital age, all lawyers will need to have a commercial understanding of emerging technology and its inherent risks and opportunities”.

The course consists of three 90-minute evening lectures presented online by experts from the firm’s emerging technology and digital law groups, who have advised major tech brands. These lawyers specialise in the metaverse, NFTs and AI. They also routinely advise some of the world’s largest technology brands.

Each session includes an “ask me anything” (AMA) session, where students can pose questions to the firm’s experts. Students who attend the course could also win a mentoring session with HSF’s digital lawyers.
